Authentic Garden Design for Modern Lifestyles and Contemporary Landscapes
( Let' s Start a Conversation )
01 About the work of landscape architects
What do people ask a landscape architect to do?
What defines a space? What makes a landscape current or historical? What connects us to the outside?
Our needs for the landscape have changed - while the importance of a soft line between indoor and outside spaces is high - our busy schedules demand less fuss and more experience.
Landscape Architects draw inspiration from nature to make outdoor spaces inviting and environmentally sustainable. We think about the landscape as a system, what defines each unique place ecologically and culturally by the influence of people on it, We are called on to assess and analyze elements : how water travels, maximize and take advantage of the sun's light in winter and plan for shade from it in summer; we take notice to the wind and consider winter weather; we assess views and scale and look for purpose in natural features already present. A landscape architect plans for function while making your landscape cohesive with architecture and your lifestyle.
Perception of outdoor space is relative to our experiences in nature, we are drawn to places which remind us of our youth, allow us rest, provide laughter with friends; we gather in places where we prepare good food. We long to be where we are grounded to the outside and where time drifts by without notice.
Our work adds value.
As a designer, 'living in the landscape' during the planning process is a vital step that brings out the integrity of details and craftsmanship.
The modern landscape needs strong hardscape backbone and clean lines with vibrant, yet manageable plantings. Gardens need to be welcoming, ensue liveability and favor eological processes. Landscapes need to function and be beautiful in all seasons - they must be seamless with their owners lifestyle, expectations for maintenance and add value to the property.
At the residential scale the most successful landscapes have been the result of an early conceptual master planning aligned with an architect, offer reference to appropriate design theory - whether contemporary or classic - and include a vision of context for the site that translates the goals and program the client.
02 About me
Laura S.D. Greloch brings over thirty years of professional office and field experience
to this work. As a landscape architect, she is passionate about her profession! A career in this design discipline includes many facets of practice that begin with embracing the human story, interpreting and stewarding a sense of place and ultimately connecting people to nature.
'What has made me an exceptional designer is, in a large part due to the years of experience I have had building landscapes and gardens, and maintaining them. Nothing replaces getting your hands, and boots, in the trench to truly get the logistics for time, costs and execution down-pat. Working the field has elevated my approach with knowledge in hardscapes, the timing of roughing in irrigation mains or lighting conduits, understanding plant culture and the ecology of the site; it has given me experience in how to communicate and be respected by the craftsmen - those contractors who are called to perform on good weather days and bad breathing reality into our visions.'
As a landscape architect and horticultural practioner, I have engaged clients on many levels of detail and involvement. Concepts may be subtle or very well developed and include light or more in depth tasks :
property master planning, set elevations for buildings, pools, terraces
-
driveway layout - sense of arrival
-
grading, drainage, water collection and management
-
create views - establish privacy
-
preserve cultural and natural features, protect existing trees and topography
-
influence door and window placement to maximize views and ventilation
-
placement of garden art or whimsy
-
disguise mechanicals, waste containers and position generators for low impact
-
replicate natural landscapes through ecologically matched matrix and meadow plantings
-
establish a potage garden, orchard, and seasonal cutting gardens
-
selection of outdoor furnishings, planters, light fixtures
-
design custom fountains, ponds, pools, outdoor kitchens and showers
-
manage construction, maintenance and aftercare
'I have utilized the relationship of new and old structures to extend architecture into the landscape in an appropriate scale that binds the built elements to the land in a way that feels intended, personal and timeless.'
Having grown up and worked in the pastoral Pennsylvania
counties of Buck's, Northampton, Lehigh, and Berks and Hunterdon County, New Jersey, my work and style have been influenced by the scale of agrarian landscapes and the desire to live and engage with the regional
community and historic villages tucked away in the Delaware
and Lehigh River Valleys.
